United States Disc Golf Championship 1999

Trip dates: October 6-10
Round trip distance: Let's say... 600
Tournaments: USDGC
Courses played: Winthrop University Gold

USDGC, huh?  Yup.  I much prefer calling it the US Open, though, and I think (should the occasion arise) I will do so for the rest of this page.   Which won't be too terribly long, I'm afraid, as I'm actually working on non disc stuff right now (what, can't you tell?) and should probably get back to it.

But for now let's just say it was, from the disc golf side, a wonderful tournament.  They didn't get as much public interest as they'd hoped, but there was some and the monsoon on Sunday didn't help things.   They had 68 people this year.  Expect 144 next year from word of mouth alone.

Let's see, what else.  Stokeley put his second shot on the 1000+ foot #8 20 feet from the hole (to the cheers of many) and proceeded to miss his putt (He also fell backwards off a small cliff into the creek and somehow managed to land on his feet).  Aaron Wield pouted a lot but still managed to be a pretty friendly guy.  Ron Russell pouted a lot but didn't come close to being a friendly guy.  Harold Duvall took a 10 on hole #17 (the island hole)...  I'm told the hole was his idea in the first place.  Stan McDaniel shot 57's in his first 3 rounds.  Derek Robins shot 59's in his first 3 rounds.  In the first 3 rounds Ken Climo shot 3 of the tournament's best 4 scores.  Brian Graham's a hoss.  A group of mental patients played a full 18 holes of glow golf on Friday night/Saturday morning.  There was a stirring rendition of Star Spangled Banner whistled by most of the crowd as the flag was being setup for the awards ceremony (followed by a quickly aborted America the Beautiful).  The barbeque was good.  I own the course record on the six hole pitch and putt at (what else) 6 under.  Derek also shot a 6.   As far as I know the only ace was Climo on hole 17.  Umbrellas are wonderful.

Oh, get this. This was going to be in the list up there but really deserves its own paragraph.  Heck, maybe its own page (or website).  Juliana came to practice the course on Saturday afternoon and played a round with Phil.  She shot a 56.  A fifty-six.  If you don't stare at that number and wonder if it's a typo then you don't understand the course.  Go look at the scores from the tournament and then come back and gawk some at that five-six.  Scott Stokeley, for comparison, came in 18th by shooting a 59, 55, 60, 62.  Can you say, "Damn!", boys and girls?   Included in that round was 3, 3, 5 on holes 11, 12, and 13, something that very (very) few of the men managed.   She shot a 68 in the rain on Sunday with a couple of rought OB strokes, a number which doesn't look out of place amongst the mens scores.  Here's hoping she'll play with the guys next year.

Team Lynx shot a few informal rounds and probably wouldn't have come in last had they been in the tournament.  Wills park had pretty good representation, Phil finished 4th, Cam cashed, and Jeff and Jesse both did ok (although I'm sure I'd hear arguments from them about it).
