The Big Show in Texas
Or So Lesli Says

The 2002 tour has begun for the Flying Eye Crew. Our first stop is the Big Show in Texas. Worm, Cam and myself left Mobile on Wednesday night in the newly designed van which consists of two turntables and a mixer. This is our new favorite toy on tour. Cam and Worm can spin records in the van or the pop-up. I personally haven't given the DJ thing a try but you never know, I may just give it a spin sooner or later. Anyway we arrived in the Dallas area Thursday afternoon. We met up with the Winniecrew at Maceman's house and hung out there for awhile with those guys, Dave Greenwell and Billy Crump. The Winniecrew is riding with us for the Texas events which makes for quite a large group.

We all decided to get a hotel for the night since it was too late to find the campground and set up the camper. Little did we know that finding a room was going to take even longer! Let me just say that driving in TX is ridiculous! You can see all the things you want to go to but you just can't get to them. After driving around for about an hour we finally zeroed in on the Motel6. The next morning we headed out to Lake Park in Lewisville. This was the course we were going to play for the first tournament. There is a campground right next to the course so we checked in and set up the camper for a few days.

That afternoon the guys (Dave, Avery, Worm, Todd, Al, Barry, and Greenwell) gave out tips and pointers at the clinic Maceman held for some local disc golfers. The turnout was pretty good and the people seemed to enjoy the opportunity to learn new things and watch the top pros demonstrate. After the clinic we finished up our practice round and headed back to the campground. Saturday was the official start of the season and for us it was playing a course blind that had O.B. on every hole. Well not much to my surprise my scorecard reflected it. I shot a grueling 67, Worm shot 59, and Cam shot 54. The second round went a little better at Leonard L. Woods Park, Cam shot 46, Worm shot 47, and I shot 62. The second day of play was at Lake Park, I carded a 60 & 57 which was good enough for DFL. Cam ended up in 11th and Worm tied with Al for 7th place. Dave Feldberg was the man of the weekend winning his first supertour! Actually I think it is his first pro win ever. We all joked with him about losing his virginity. Congratulations, Dave!

Tuesday it was off to play a one day, two round B-tier at Jimmy Porter Park. The design of the course wasn't bad but there was a ditch that ran through the course that seemed to be toxic. The course had a lot of garbage everywhere and there were no bridges to get across the ditch on a few holes which made for quite a challenge. Anyway, Barry won in the men's division and Juliana made it two for the Big Show although Nadine Larkin gave her a run for her money. Cam just missed the cash, Worm came in 5th and I also missed the cash coming in third. That night after the tournament a big group of us played glow doubles at the Lake course. It was a full moon which made it a perfect night for glow. Worm and his partner shot an amazing -15 and Cam aced hole 18 with a glow Teebird. Wednesday it turned really cold and Cam and I decided to take the day off. Thursdays B-tier is at Fritz Park which appears to be really sweet. Since I am taking the day off I will be playing it blind for the tourney. I'll let you know which is better, letting your body rest or practicing the course. Well I can't really say for sure which is better because I didn't play after all. Thursdays weather turned out to be worse than Wednesdays and a lot wetter. Both crews (flying eye & winnie) decided to take the day off. After going by the course and getting our entry fees returned we all headed over to Maceman's house. David Greenwell also took the day off so we hung out with him most of the day and then went to the Grand Buffet (chinese) for dinner.

Friday morning we took the pop-up to the new campground by Zboaz Park and set up for the weekend. After getting the living arrangements settled in we headed over to Zboaz to practice for the tournament on Saturday. The temporary course was not set up yet so we played a round at the original and then after Mace flagged the temp course we headed over to see it. We didn't quite get finished with the course before dark settled in. My comment for that is why do TD's always wait until the last minute to set up everything? It happens in a lot of places we go to and it just seems like course preparations could be made in advance. I don't think any player should be expected to play in a supertour event on a course they were never given an opportunity to see or practice. Anyway, Saturday morning the pros played the temp course. The hot round was Chauncey Donaldson at -13 and Juliana shot -8. The second round was at Zboaz and I believe the best score was a -9 (Kevin McCoy) and -6 (Juliana). Super Bowl Sunday we played the third round at Zboaz and a final 9 at the temp course. The pro men played holes 1-9 and the pro W,M,GM played 10-18. After it was all said and done Barry Schultz came out on top, Kevin McCoy was second, Nolan Grider third, and Avery Jenkins was fourth. Juliana made it three wins, I came in 2nd over Des Reading 3rd and Nadine Larkin was 4th. The top 4 in these two divisions played a mixed doubles skins match for $1000. The big winners were Juliana and Avery with $800. Barry and Nadine won $200 and Nolan, myself, Des, and Kevin were unfortunately shut out of the skins. After the awards ceremony we headed back to the campground for one more night.

Tomorrow the WinnieCrew will be leaving with Al and Sue for California and we are going to Colorado for a few days. Worm and I have never been so I am pretty excited about going. Hopefully we will get a lot of cool pictures to share.
