Raleigh

En route to Raleigh, NC we made a stop in Atlanta to visit with friends (mostly Dickie) and to park the pop-up for a couple of tournaments.  It really needed a rest.  I don't think pop-up campers are made to travel 20 or 30,000 miles in one year.  Al and Sue had a blow out and lost their rim on the way to Raleigh.  Similar incident to our Texas trauma. Anyway, while in Atlanta we met up with Todd to restock the bins with discs and merchandise, hopefully to sell to all you people out there (We really need to sell, the van is starting to overflow!).  After taking care of business, we headed to Raleigh.  It rained the entire drive to NC, not your ideal traveling weather.  Especially when half the people driving don't know to use their lights when it's raining.  "Hello people, we can't see you!"

Despite the weather we arrived in Raleigh Thursday night.  We stayed at Dave Mansfield, Brian "Mad Dog" McCree, and Brian Schweberger's house along with the Winnicrew, Al and Sue, and some people from Charlotte.  Friday morning we all went to Cedar Hills disc golf course to play. Worm and I had never seen the course, I was pleasantly surprised.  It had a lot of wooded holes, but it was a fair wooded course.  There were definite fairways with plenty of width.  elevation also played throughout the course, which always makes for a challenge.  Anyway, we all put in a dollar, split into 4 groups, and play a quick round of singles.  Cam took the dollars with a -8.  After Cedar Hills we all went to lunch and headed over to Zebulon disc golf course.  Zebulon is a really nice course designed by Dave Mansfield (although it does have a pretty severe drainage problem).  We played a lot of water casual during the tourney. Since it had gotten pretty late in the day we played a $5 round of random draw doubles.  Cam teamed up with Dave Feldberg, they shot -11 to win.  After doubles we cruised back to the house to chill out before the tournament on Saturday.  For the full tournament details, read "Worm Speaks."

Disclanding

Monday we headed out to Charlotte, NC.  We stayed with Alan Wooten and Matt King.  These guys have been really awesome and they always make us feel at home.  We made plans with Alan to go to the Innova warehouse and play a round of golf at Winthrop.  Unfortunately we spent so much time at the warehouse that we didn't get to play Winthrop. You should have seen us, it was like 4 kids in a candy store.  I think going to Innova and getting to see all of those sweat discs new and old is one of the most fun things on tour. We all left there very happy.  Thanks to Phil, Jonathan, Harold, Billy Crump, and all of the other guys at Innova for their help.

After we left Rock Hill we went and played a quick 9 holes at Kilbourne park with Matt and Anton.  After Kilbourne we headed over to, "Disclanding," a new disc golf store in Charlotte.  The store was really nice with a great selection of discs, bags, clothing, apparel, etc.  The store is run by Warren and Ashley Stiles and Zeb Campbell and is dedicated strictly to disc golf.  Disclanding is sponsoring me this year, which is a great blessing!  They pay some of my entry fees and supply me with really cool clothes and some discs that I need.  Sponsorship helps tremendously when you're touring full time.  Thanks for Disclanding for everything they have done for me and disc golf!  I met Warren Stiles at the Women's National Championships, he is tournament director for the event.

Speaking of WNC, I hoe to see more women at this event in 2001, especially in the pro division.  This event caters to women disc golfers and in return for their efforts the women should really try to support their tourney.  Hornets Nest (the course for the WNC) is a beautiful and challenging course and the final round is played on the Winthrop Golf Course, which is no doubt one of the greatest courses in the USA.

Charlotte

Anyway, after hanging out at the store and the warehouse all day we needed rest from all the shopping (just kidding), so we headed back to Alan and Matt's.  Wednesday we all decided to go and play Hornets Nest.  We ended up playing $.25/hole WOLF.  There was this one funny incident during the round involving Worm.  On hole #7 at the nest there is a creek that runs along the left side of the fairway.  It is a slight anhyzer to the basket for a righty, so if you don't turn it you can easily fade off into the creek. Everyone teed up and 3 out of the 6 went OB. Two of the discs were retrieved fairly easily, but [Ed:  Remember how I said, a few weeks ago, that Lesli has really nice handwriting?  She does, I swear, but I'll be damned if I can figure out what she wrote here, my best guess is, "Milldog" -- which may be right, of course, but might be unbelievably not even close... I'll take my chances] Milldog [Told you] had been working on his for about 10 or 15 minutes.  So finally Worm decides he can scale this slick red clay wall down to the disc by holding on to this little root for leverage.  We warned him that the root didn't look strong enough, but he kept saying, "I got it, it's all good."  As soon as he spoke those words, he slipped on the clay, the root snapped, and Worm falls backwards into the creek.  He actually made a great save from getting his entire body soaked.  He just kept stepping backwards and ended up only getting soaked from the knee down (and the waist up was wet from all the splashing).  I must say it was pretty entertaining and a great laugh for everyone, even Worm.  After the round at hornets Nest we played another 18 at Kilbourne.  Thursday morning we headed out to Gainesville.
