Lesli on Birmingham Hopefully you have read most of the details about the Birmingham Tax Tourney from Ryan Renz (our fellow Flying Eye team member). I noticed he took a lot of notes over the weekend, especially during the final 9 skins match. We played 2 courses at this tourney, George Ward Park and B'ham's new course which is located on an old ball golf course. Both courses were beautiful and very challenging. George Ward park is fairly short with quite a variety of shots, elevation plays a lot at this course. The other course still shows its newness, especially in certain spots but overall I think it has potential to be a sweet course with a few changes and more maintenance. There wasn't really a lot of excitement in the women's division after the first round. I pulled away pretty quickly and ended up winning by 30 strokes over Kimberly Newman (2nd) and Pat Searle (3rd). There was one thing about the women's division that was frustrating and that was our payout. There were 3 women who played and 3 women got paid. 1st place was $100, 2nd was $60, and last was $40. I paid $57 to enter so as you can see I didn't even double my entry fee. In my personal opinion last place in any division should not get paid. It really troubles me when I compare my division to the open men's division payout. I mean, what tournament can you remember or find that the last place man got paid? I'll bet none! We are not asking to be treated differently, we just are. Anyway, with that said it was still a good tournament and fun weekend. Saturday night at the hotel we played mini golf through the hallways and lobby. Speedy Gonzales brought the Disc Golf Hall of Fame to the hotel lobby for the weekend and we got to check that out. It was pretty cool to see some historical memorabilia pertaining to disc golf. Not to mention some funny pictures of people we know now. All I have to say is Dave Greenwell is the Dick Clark of disc golf, he hasn't aged or changed a bit. Dr. Rick is a Dick Clark wannabe, too. After the tournament was over we headed back to Atlanta for a couple of days before the Bowling Green Open. Special thanks to Ryan Renz for sharing his hotel room with us in B'ham. Ryan is a super guy who kicks down sponsorship in all kinds of ways for a lot of different people. It's little things that people do that really go a long way in helping disc golf stay alive. |
